WHEN YOUR PET NEEDS HELP

If you have a pet, you will probably have to face situations from time to time when it needs extra help.

LOST, STOLEN OR STRAYED

The best way of making sure you find a missing pet is to have it microchipped. Your veterinary surgeon swill painlessly insert a tiny microchip, no bigger than a grain of rice, under your pet's skin. Ones it has been microchipped it has its own unique coe number. Your name and address are kept with this number on a national computer database. If your pet is lost or stolen, it can be quickly identified when it is found by passing a scanner over the microchip.

If your pet does go missing:

  • Make a thorough search of your house and garden
  • contact your neighbours and ask them to check their sheds and garages
  • put up posters around the neighbourhood offering a reward
  • contact local vets, dog wardens

WHEN YOUR PET IS ILL

Every animal has its own character and you will know your pet's normal behaviour and habits. Any change, in particular reduced appetite or increased thirst, may mean it is unwell.

There may be other obvious symptoms such as:

  • diarrhoea and/or vomiting
  • discharges
  • coughs
  • whimpering or yelping for no apparent reason
  • lameness
